Old School AVID Projects

When I mean old school, I mean OLD SCHOOL. This was in the late 1990s when video editing on computers was slow and tedious. I was working on AVID Media Composer 8000 on a Macintosh Quadra 950 and using Photoshop 5. Video was shot on Beta SP too. And I walked to school uphill both ways. Get off my lawn.

There were two gentlemen in another department who tried to teach me AVID. I would ask how to do a special effect and their answer would be “you can’t.” I didn’t accept that answer and pretty much taught myself the program.

Below are some promos I made while working at WSLS in Roanoke, Virginia. I started off as an editor in the Promotions Department and then was a bit of a one-woman band for a while until I was promoted to promotions producer. These are some of my earliest projects both with editing and writing.

Let me start off with a story behind one of the promos. In 1998, NBC aired the Super Bowl (Packers v. Broncos – remember? Neither do I.). I was the video editor for the promotions department and worked with two very talented gentlemen – one a graphic artist and the other a producer/videographer. The Thursday before the Super Bowl, our boss came to us and said “We need three high-quality promos to air during the Super Bowl. Get to it.” Um, the Super Bowl is in three days. So we got some chroma key green paint and painted our unused small studio and put together this little promo as well as two others in time to air for the Super Bowl.

Did you make it this far? Cool! Thanks!
